When I was recovering from my shoulder surgery, I spent a lot of time in my garage gym doing single arm stuff with dumbbells (my girlfriend does Street Parking so I did a lot of those workouts modified). As I recovered and was cleared to do more, I kept up with my dumbbell workouts but went very light at first on my repaired side, gradually building up until I was fully cleared and am now pretty much back to normal.
Even fully recovered and able to use a barbell, I find myself enjoying dumbbell WODs more. With barbells, I feel like you can compensate for limiters with mobility, stabilization and balance (one arm being stronger than the other.) With dumbbells, those limiters get exposed, and you’re forced to correct all of those. And I like that challenge. Plus, I kind of like some of the movements you can only do with dumbbells, like man makers and devil presses.
Anyone else feel similar?
